Pakistan became an important transit country in the drug trade in the 1980s, following the political upheavals and instability in neighbouring Afghanistan.
As a consequence of this, consumption of heroin in Pakistan significantly increased.
No official statistics for Pakistan's heroin addicts exists but a walk in any of its major cities shows quite plainly the gravity of the issue.
